The hepatitis B virus is spread mainly by body fluids or blood,i.e. infection occurs through intimate contact,blood transfusions,jnjections and other direct contact.
The infection generally can be through vertical transmission (the infected mother passing the virus to the baby before or after birth) and horizontal transmission (blood or body fluids contating the virus passing through the skin or mucous memberane into the body, i.e. through blood transfusion,sharing of needles or syringes......to cause infection).
Early vaccination can prevent hepatitis B infection. TO prevent mother to baby vertical transmission, our government has fully implemented a policy of free hepatitis B vaccination.
If the mother is hepatitis B surface antigen or e antigen positive ,the baby would immediately receive hepatitis B immune globulin within 24 hours of birth.
